Permanent Makeup - Eyebrows – I can’t believe I did it!

Not only did I have a permanent makeup procedure done once; I did it twice. The first time I did, several girlfriends and I had a few glasses of wine and I did it on a dare.  I had a eyebrow tattoo procedure done. I had never been interested in some little heart with an arrow through it on my ankle or a butterfly on my buttocks, but eyebrow tattoo that made sense. I was not sorry the next day or anytime after that unlike some gals who get a tattoo after a few glasses of wine and a dare. It didn’t hurt. It was like little pin pricks. My eyebrows did feel hot when the tattoo artist was almost finished and then they were very slightly sore for an hour.

The first time it was done in a plastic surgeon’s office. My girlfriends and I had been attending a seminar on cosmetic procedures. For the first five years the eyebrow tattoos needed no penciling at all. But when they faded (and they will eventually fade) after eight years, I used the permanent eyebrow line, had the correct shape, .as guidelines for when I needed to pencil them in.

Fast-forward eight years. I am in the beauty parlor having my eyebrows waxed when the cosmetician remarked that one eyebrow was sparser than the other. That was obvious now that most of the tattoo was gone. “Why don’t you have it done again,” she asked. I decided then to make an appointment.

I had the procedure four days later and for a few days I needed to apply ointment to the scabs twice a day; I was not to get them wet. The color is darker than it will be when the scabs come off. What scabs? I didn’t think I had anything done so painful it would cause scabbing. Wrong! They will scab and then the color will be a much lighter brown to go with my fair coloring.

Here is my warning. Check around for someone experienced in creating permanent make-up. I have no desire to tattoo my lips and although I did have eyeliner done the first time I won’t go down that road again. It was great while it lasted and it does mean foregoing all those messy pencils and liquid liners but I think I would need more than a few glasses of wine to get it done again. I had never realized before having my eyebrows done the first time how important it is to have well shaped brows. I had put much more emphasize on eye shadow, foundation and blush. But well shaped eyebrows truly make your eyes look bigger and give your entire face balance. Think about it.

Wow. They look nice and natural. (the ones in the pic) Would you have to retouch them in say, maybe 10 years time?

I should tell you that at first the color may seem too dark. The woman who did mine had me come a second time to add more color.I thought my eyebrows looked to dark but in a few weeks they had faded to a natural color. Be sure you find someone really qualified. Eyebrows aren't as risky as eyeliner. I had not had my eyeliner re-done and I had that done ten years ago. When someone is working that close to my eye I get nervous. Mine were done in a doctor's office by an assistant. I would choose that over a hairdresser or an ad in the paper when it comes to eyeliner. It is great not to have to re-invent my brows every morning.

Very interesting article Svea! Some comments though: do not have permanent makeup done after having wine, - it promotes bleeding and reduces color retention. If the procedure was done right - using epinephrene throughout procedure to control bleeding - you should not have scabbing or swelling afterwards. I definitely agree with you that having it done in doctor's office is far safer than anywhere else. However, that alone is not enough. The practicioner must also be an experienced make-up artist in order to pick the best color and to create the mostr flattering shape. You can find a lot of information regarding permanent makeup on my website www.ChicagoPermanentCosmetics.com

Best of luck to you.

I have just had my eyebrows permanently shaped by Ashlene McCormack, and I have to say how delighted I am with the amazing difference it has made to the shape of my face. I am thrilled with the results, and was really impressed with the painstaking patience and expertise I have received from her. Thankyou, Ashlene for doing a perfect job!!!

Since I first posted this hub I have had mine re-done. Exfoliants do cause them to fade. Of course, no matter how faint the line you want is there. Don't be alarmed if the brows seem a little dark at first. They will fade to the color you want in a short time. I had the liner done a long time age, but haven't worked up the courage to do that again. However, even now I still have some of the lines left. Be sure to go to someone with a good track record.

I had my eyebrows tattooed today and I was freaking out til I read these comments- they look way too dark but I feel very reassured now that they will fade soon to a more natural colour. Thanks so much xxx

I am going to get this done and am nervous, I hope somebody can help me out. What is the RECOVERY like? Will my brows really scab? And by scab, does it look like two burnt caterpillers above my eyes, or are they small patchy scabs that aren't super visible? How long does it take for me to leave my house and look sort of normal? I want to go to the gym, how long after will I have to wait?

Go out that day..Nobody will notice except perhaps the darker color...go with a little darker eye make up and it will be less noticeable. This is not a big deal. You will notice some scaling in a few days but not scarring as you imagine it. This is not like plastic surgery!

Trust me! I have had a number of procedures and this one is a piece of cake. I never again have to make my own eyebrows, and frankly as we age it becomes more diffcult to know exactly where they belong. I get my eyebrows plucked about once in six weeks and I never have to worry that someone is going to create new eyebrows for me. A big thing to remember is plucking. Even with your new eyebrows to maintain the shape you want to frame your face I suggest you get it done professionally. of course, that is only 10 dollars where I go. If you do it yourself remember to pluck all those stray hairs that are anywhere other than your new eyebrows and also pluck out those overly long ones especially as many come in gray. Gads! Good Luck. If your eyebrows feel hot when you are through put an ice pack on. They probably will be red in the same way that they would be after plucking.

Good Luck!

Had a holiday in Turkey this year, prices over there for tattooing make up are exellent, so I thought what the heck, & went ahead with eye brows & lip liner, really pleased with the results, lips did scab over a bit but do heal very quick, takes a few weeks for the true colour to come through im told, so eagerly waiting now... eyebrows my god they really do scab over especially if like me you opt for the block covering, but vaseline is simply brill & the scabbing is really softening. i have made a follow up appointment over here with a professional semi permenant make up artist, for advice & touch up's but all in all i truely feel its worth the pain as the results do appear to be showing positive...!

You will love the final results. Go easy on the exfoliant in those areas. That can fade them faster than they would fade naturally.
